Lighting is the key in creating a scene for still life painting.
My art teacher always makes sure there is a contrast between light and dark on the objects, including the shadow on the table makes them appear 3D.

This photo was taken from my angle, and other students are painting from their angle as well. As a usual practice, we take pictures on the first day of the new painting because fruits tend to change color and shape after a few days.
I have requested to try palette knife painting, and I think my teacher has taught me the essential steps in creating a decent-looking painting. This is how it looks as a completed palette knife painting:
